Meditation for First-Timers

The most common barrier to meditation is the belief that you must 'stop thinking'. This is not the practice. The practice is noticing when the mind wanders — and gently returning.
Find a quiet place, sit comfortably, and close your eyes. Bring attention to the breath at the nostrils or the rise and fall of the chest. When thoughts arise — and they will — label them gently and return to the breath.
Start with five minutes. Consistency matters far more than duration. A daily five-minute practice will take you further than an occasional hour.
With time, stillness begins to appear between thoughts. You will not force it. It arrives on its own, like sky appearing between clouds — always there, simply noticed at last.
